SRI LANKA MARINE WEATHER FORECAST FOR 03 JANUARY 2026

Marine Weather Alert: Rough Seas and Strong Winds Forecast for Coastal Areas

The Department of Meteorology has issued a comprehensive weather advisory for the sea areas surrounding the island, effective for the 24-hour period following its 2:00 p.m. update on January 2, 2026. Naval and fishing communities are urged to exercise caution as atmospheric conditions are expected to trigger significant turbulence and heavy rainfall across several maritime zones.

According to the latest bulletin, a wave of showers and thundershowers is set to impact a vast stretch of the coastal belt. The affected regions extend from Puttalam to Trincomalee, encompassing the waters off Colombo, Galle, Hambantota, and Batticaloa. While these areas will experience the brunt of the wet weather, the Department noted that scattered showers may also develop in the remaining sea areas around the island.

The wind profile for the next 24 hours indicates a dominant northerly to north-easterly flow. While average wind speeds are expected to hover between 30 and 40 kmph, a sharp increase is anticipated in specific zones. Winds could gust up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Hambantota, passing through Colombo, Puttalam, Kankesanthurai, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa.

These elevated wind speeds will directly impact the state of the sea. Mariners should prepare for rough conditions in the waters stretching from Galle to Hambantota via the northern and eastern coasts. In contrast, other sea areas around the island are expected to maintain a moderate state, though conditions can change rapidly.

Of particular concern is the threat posed by localized thundershowers. The Department of Meteorology warned that these storms could bring sudden, strong gusty winds and lead to very rough seas instantaneously. All maritime stakeholders are advised to remain vigilant, monitor official communications, and take necessary safety precautions during this period to mitigate risks associated with the deteriorating sea conditions.
