SRI LANKA GENERAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR 03 JANUARY 2026

Developing Atmospheric Disturbance to Trigger Heavy Rainfall Across Sri Lanka

Residents across several provinces are advised to prepare for a significant increase in rainfall as the Department of Meteorology reports the development of a low-level atmospheric disturbance to the east of Sri Lanka. In a general weather forecast issued at 4:00 p.m. today, January 2, 2026, authorities that showery conditions are expected to intensify over the Eastern, Northern, and Uva provinces in the coming days.

According to the 36-hour outlook, persistent showers will occur at times in the Eastern, Central, North-central, and Uva provinces, as well as the Hambantota district. Meteorologists have flagged the potential for fairly heavy falls exceeding 75 mm in specific regions, including the Eastern and Uva provinces and the Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, and Polonnaruwa districts. Meanwhile, the Northern province is expected to experience several spells of showers throughout the period.

The rest of the island will not be entirely spared, as showers or thundershowers are likely to develop at several locations after 2:00 p.m. These afternoon and evening thundershowers may bring fairly heavy falls above 50 mm in some areas, potentially causing localized disruptions.

In addition to the rain, commuters and residents in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, should prepare for misty conditions during the early morning hours. This reduced visibility may impact road travel, and drivers are urged to exercise caution.

The Department of Meteorology has issued a formal request to the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning and temporary localized strong winds, which are frequently associated with thundershowers. With the disturbance developing to the east, weather experts will continue to monitor the situation closely as the system evolves.
