SRI LANKA WEATHER FORECAST FOR TODAY, 29 MAY 2026

Sri Lanka Weather Forecast: Strong Winds and Rough Seas Continue on 29 May 2026

Showery weather conditions are expected to continue across several parts of Sri Lanka today, according to the latest forecast issued by the Department of Meteorology at 5.30 a.m. on 29 May 2026. Residents in many provinces have been advised to remain alert for heavy rain, gusty winds, lightning and rough sea conditions.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya. Meanwhile, isolated showers or thundershowers may also develop after 1.00 p.m. in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and across the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces, including the Trincomalee district. Authorities have requested the public to take precautions to minimize damage caused by localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea conditions around the island are also expected to remain unsettled during the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers are forecast in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

Southwesterly winds over the sea are expected to range between 30–40 kmph, while wind speeds may increase up to 55–65 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Other sea areas around the island may also experience wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph.

The sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw and from Matara to Pottuvil are expected to become very rough at times, while the remaining sea areas will be fairly rough. Wave heights between 2.0 and 2.5 meters are also likely in the sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Naval and fishing communities are advised to remain vigilant and monitor future weather advisories closely.
