The prevailing showery weather condition affecting the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka is expected to continue today, according to the latest weather forecast issued at 5.30 a.m. on 28 May 2026 by the Department of Meteorology.
Showers or thundershowers are forecast to occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya. Fairly heavy rainfall of around 75 mm is likely at some locations, particularly in the Galle, Matara, Kaluthara and Rathnapura districts.
Meanwhile, isolated showers or thundershowers may develop after 1.00 p.m. in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.
The Department of Meteorology has also warned of fairly strong winds ranging between 30-40 kmph at times over the western slopes of the central hills and across the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces, including the Trincomalee district. The public has been advised to take precautions against possible damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea conditions around the island are expected to remain rough due to the active weather pattern. Showers or thundershowers are likely in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
Winds over sea areas will be southwesterly with speeds of 30-40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas stretching from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Other sea areas around the island may also experience wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph.
The sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be rough at times, while other sea areas will remain fairly rough. Wave heights between 2.0 and 2.5 meters may increase in the sea areas from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
Naval and fishing communities are advised to remain alert, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
