Sri Lanka Braces for Intensified Rains as Atmospheric Disturbance Looms

The Department of Meteorology has issued a high-priority weather bulletin at 2:00 p.m. today, January 2, 2026, of an escalation in showery conditions across several provinces. A low-level atmospheric disturbance developing to the east of Sri Lanka is expected to significantly impact the island’s weather patterns starting tomorrow, Saturday, January 3, 2026.

The Met Department forecasts that showery conditions will enhance particularly in the Eastern, Northern, and Uva provinces. Frequent showers are expected throughout the day in the Eastern, Central, North-central, and Uva provinces, as well as the Hambantota district.

Authorities have identified specific regions at risk for heavy precipitation, Severe Rainfall Warning: Fairly heavy falls exceeding 75 mm are highly likely in the Eastern and Uva provinces. Regional Impact The Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, and Polonnaruwa districts are also expected to experience significant rainfall (above 75 mm). Northern Province, Residents should prepare for several spells of showers.

Afternoon Thundershowers Across the Island For the remainder of the country, atmospheric instability will likely trigger showers or thundershowers in several places after 2:00 p.m. These localized storms may bring fairly heavy falls exceeding 50 mm in certain areas, potentially leading to minor flash flooding in low-lying spots.

Heavy Mist Commuters and long-distance drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution during the early morning hours of January 3. Misty conditions are forecast for Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, Galle and Matara districts. Visibility is expected to be significantly reduced in these areas, posing a hazard for early morning travel.

The General Public is strongly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage caused by Lightning Strikes, Seek indoor shelter during thundershowers. Gusty Winds Be wary of temporary localized strong winds that can occur during afternoon storms.
