Weather conditions across Sri Lanka are expected to worsen significantly as a deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal continues to move closer to the island, prompting a Red Warning from the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology. As of 3.30 p.m. on January 8, the deep depression was located approximately 250 kilometres southeast of Pottuvil and is showing signs of steady west-northwestward movement across the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Meteorological forecasts indicate that the system is very likely to cross the Sri Lankan coastline between Hambantota and Batticaloa during the evening hours of January 9, between 5.30 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. With the system drawing closer, showery and windy conditions over the island are expected to intensify from today, particularly affecting the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. Cloud cover, persistent rainfall and strong gusty winds are likely to disrupt normal activities in many parts of the country.
Authorities warn that considerable damage may occur due to the expected adverse weather. Temporary shelters, huts and light structures are at risk of damage, especially in exposed areas, while roofing sheets and weak structures may be destroyed by strong winds. Power and communication lines could be damaged, leading to possible service interruptions, and falling tree branches or uprooted large trees may pose hazards to both pedestrians and motorists. Agricultural activities may also be affected, with potential damage to paddy cultivation, banana and papaya plantations, as well as orchards in several regions. Harbours and yachts are vulnerable to rough sea conditions, while flash flooding may occur in vulnerable locations. In addition, sea water inundation is possible in low-lying coastal areas as the system approaches land.
Residents in coastal areas, particularly those living in hutments and temporary dwellings, are advised to move to safer locations as a precautionary measure. People in other affected regions are urged to remain indoors during periods of severe weather and to limit unnecessary travel. Special attention is drawn to those living in hilly and landslide-prone areas, as well as communities in low-lying river basins, who are requested to remain vigilant and monitor local conditions closely. Drivers and road users in hilly terrain are advised to exercise extreme caution due to poor visibility, slippery roads and the risk of falling debris.
The public is further advised to stay away from fallen trees and damaged power lines and to avoid using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms to reduce the risk of accidents. In the event of emergencies, residents are urged to contact local disaster management authorities for assistance and follow official instructions promptly.
Maritime activities are expected to be severely affected as sea conditions continue to deteriorate. Naval and fishing communities have been strictly warned not to venture into deep or shallow sea areas around the island until further notice. In addition, all sea areas bounded between latitudes 02°N and 13°N and longitudes 76°E and 88°E are considered extremely dangerous during this period. Fishermen and naval personnel currently operating in these waters are strongly advised to return to the nearest coast or move to safer areas immediately to avoid life-threatening situations.
The Department of Meteorology confirms that it is continuously monitoring the behavior, movement and intensity of the deep depression using satellite imagery and other meteorological data. The general public is strongly urged to remain attentive to future forecasts, warnings and official bulletins issued by the Department and to cooperate fully with authorities as Sri Lanka prepares to face the impacts of this developing severe weather system.
