Red Warning Issued for Heavy Rain in Several Provinces of Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has issued a Red Warning for heavy rainfall affecting several parts of Sri Lanka, with the warning valid from 4.00 a.m. on 22 May 2026 until 4.00 a.m. on 23 May 2026. The alert was released by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre under Bulletin No: 01 LRW/26/05/22/02.

According to the warning, very heavy showers or thundershowers exceeding 200 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in the Galle district. Authorities warn that the intense rainfall could lead to flooding, landslides, overflowing waterways and disruptions to transportation and daily activities in vulnerable areas.

The public is strongly advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage caused by heavy rain, strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers. Residents living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas should remain highly alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities and disaster management officials.

Motorists are also advised to drive carefully due to poor visibility and waterlogged roads, while people are encouraged to avoid crossing flooded areas and unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.

Strong gusty winds and severe lightning may accompany the thundershowers, posing additional risks to property, power lines and outdoor activities. People are advised to unplug electrical appliances during storms and seek safe shelter when lightning occurs.

The Department of Meteorology stated that weather conditions are being closely monitored and further forecasts or warnings will be issued if necessary.
