SRI LANKA WEATHER FORECAST FOR 29 DECEMBER 2025

Sri Lanka Weather Forecast: Heavy Rains and Strong Winds Expected on December 29

Issued at 2.00 p.m. on 28 December 2025 — The Department of Meteorology has forecast enhanced rainy conditions and strong winds across several parts of Sri Lanka on Monday, December 29, with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm expected in some areas.

According to the latest forecast issued at 2.00 p.m. on December 28, showers will occur at times in Uva Province and in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Polonnaruwa. Meteorologists warn that fairly heavy rainfall above 50 mm is likely at several locations, raising concerns over localized flooding and landslide risks in vulnerable areas.

Meanwhile, the Northern Province, along with Kandy, Anuradhapura, and Trincomalee districts, can expect several spells of showers throughout the day.

In the south-western region, showers or thundershowers are forecast to develop at several places in Sabaragamuwa Province and in the districts of Galle, Matara, and Kalutara, particularly after 2.00 p.m.

The Department of Meteorology also cautions that fairly strong winds of around 40 kmph may occur at times, especially over the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces. Similar windy conditions are expected in Hambantota, Monaragala, and Trincomalee districts, which could lead to fallen trees, power disruptions, and rough conditions for travel.

Additionally, misty conditions are likely during the early morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, including Galle and Matara, potentially reducing visibility on roads.

The general public is urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers. Residents in landslide- and flood-prone areas are advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by disaster management authorities.
