Sri Lanka Sea Weather Update: Rough Seas and Strong Winds Expected Around the Island
Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 28 December 2025 — The Department of Meteorology has issued an updated marine weather forecast, warning of rough sea conditions, strong winds, and scattered showers in several sea areas around Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours.
According to the forecast issued at 5.30 a.m., showers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. In addition, showers or thundershowers are expected to develop in the sea areas off the coast from Kalutara to Hambantota via Galle, particularly during the evening or night.
North-easterly winds will prevail around the island, with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph. The Department of Meteorology warns that wind speeds may increase up to 45–50 kmph at times, especially in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
As a result of these conditions, the sea areas from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be rough at times. Other surrounding sea areas will remain moderate, but sudden changes may occur during thundershowers.
Fishermen, naval operators, and small craft users are strongly advised to be vigilant, closely monitor future weather bulletins, and avoid venturing into rough sea areas, particularly along the western, southern, and eastern coastal belts.
