Rough Sea Conditions Expected Around Sri Lanka as Strong Winds Persist
The Department of Meteorology has issued a sea area weather forecast warning of rough sea conditions and strong winds in several maritime zones around Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours, posing potential risks to fishing and naval activities.
According to the forecast, showers may occur at a few places in sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee, affecting parts of the northern and eastern coastal waters. In addition, showers or thundershowers are expected to develop at a few locations in sea areas off the coast from Kalutara to Hambantota via Galle, particularly during the evening or night hours.
Meteorologists report that north-easterly winds will prevail, with wind speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph across most sea areas. However, stronger winds reaching 45 to 50 kmph may occur at times in sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam, as well as from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Due to these strong winds, the sea state is expected to be rough at times in the above-mentioned coastal stretches. Meanwhile, other sea areas around the island will remain moderate, offering relatively safer conditions.
The Department of Meteorology advises fishermen and naval communities to remain vigilant, especially in areas experiencing rough seas and sudden gusty winds. Small fishing craft are urged to exercise caution or avoid venturing into affected sea regions, while coastal communities are advised to stay alert to rapidly changing marine conditions. Issued at 2.00 p.m. on 28 December 2025
