Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 09 August 2026: Heavy Rain, Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected
Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions on 09 August 2026, with showers, cloudy skies, strong winds and rough sea conditions affecting several parts of the island. The prevailing monsoonal weather pattern is expected to continue, particularly across the southwestern regions.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces, as well as in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail over these areas. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible at some locations in Sabaragamuwa Province and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts.
Several spells of showers may also occur in the North-western Province. Meanwhile, strong winds of around 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the North-central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces, as well as Trincomalee District.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Residents should remain alert to falling branches, unsecured objects and other hazards associated with strong winds.
Rough and Very Rough Seas Expected
Sea conditions are also expected to remain hazardous during the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
Westerly to south-westerly winds will blow at speeds of around 30–40 kmph. However, wind speeds could increase to 60–70 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Mannar via Kalpitiya and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds may also increase up to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas extending from Batticaloa to Mannar via Trincomalee and Kankasanthurai, and from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
The sea areas from Chilaw to Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil are expected to be rough or very rough at times. Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.
Other sea areas, including those from Batticaloa to Mannar and Chilaw to Matara, will be rough at times. Fishing and naval communities operating in these areas are urged to remain vigilant.
Wave heights may increase to approximately 2.5–3.0 metres in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas may also occur during thundershowers.
The public and maritime communities are encouraged to closely monitor official weather updates and follow safety instructions as adverse conditions continue.
