Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions on Monday, 10 August 2026, with showers or thundershowers affecting several parts of the island. The forecast, issued at 2.00 p.m. on 9 August by the Department of Meteorology, warns of rainfall, strong winds and hazardous sea conditions in several areas.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. A few showers or thundershowers may also develop in the Uva Province and in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Mullaitivu districts after 2.00 p.m. Several spells of showers are possible in the North-Western Province.
Strong winds of around 30–40 kmph are expected at times over the North-Central, North-Western, Central and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district. The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Rough and Very Rough Seas Expected
Marine conditions are expected to become particularly challenging over several coastal areas during the next 24 hours. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
Winds over the surrounding seas will be westerly to south-westerly at speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may exceed 60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds may also increase up to 50 kmph in the sea areas from Batticaloa to Chilaw via Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai and Mannar, and from Galle to Matara.
The sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be rough or very rough at times. Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these waters until further notice. Other areas, including the seas from Batticaloa to Chilaw and from Galle to Matara, may also experience rough conditions, requiring fishing and naval communities to remain vigilant.
Wave heights may increase to around 2.5–3.0 metres in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
The public and marine communities are urged to closely monitor official weather updates and take necessary safety precautions as conditions may change rapidly.
