Rough Sea Conditions Expected in Several Coastal Areas Around Sri Lanka
Rough sea conditions are expected in several sea areas around Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours, according to the latest marine weather forecast issued by the Department of Meteorology at 5.30 a.m. today.
Showers are likely to occur at a few locations in the sea areas off the eastern coastline, particularly from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee. These intermittent showers may reduce visibility at sea, especially during passing rain clouds.
The Meteorology Department reports that north-easterly winds will prevail across most sea areas surrounding the island. Wind speeds are expected to range between 30 and 40 kmph, with occasional gusts increasing up to 45–50 kmph. Stronger winds are anticipated in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Mannar via Puttalam, as well as from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
Due to the intensified winds, the sea state is forecast to be rough at times in the above-mentioned western, north-western, and south-eastern coastal waters. Meanwhile, other sea areas around the island are expected to remain moderate, offering relatively safer conditions for navigation.
The Department of Meteorology urges fishermen, naval personnel, and small craft operators to exercise caution when venturing into the affected sea areas. Mariners are advised to stay alert for updated weather bulletins and take necessary safety measures to avoid potential hazards caused by strong winds and rough seas.
This marine advisory remains valid for the next 24 hours, and further updates will be issued if weather conditions change significantly.
