Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued for Several Parts of Sri Lanka on December 30
The Department of Meteorology has forecast showery weather with the possibility of fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm in several parts of Sri Lanka today, according to the latest weather bulletin issued at 5.30 a.m.
Intermittent showers are expected in the Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Polonnaruwa districts. Meteorologists warn that some areas within these regions could experience fairly heavy rainfalls, increasing the risk of localized flooding and waterlogging.
Meanwhile, Kandy and Anuradhapura districts are likely to experience several spells of showers throughout the day, while isolated showers or thundershowers may develop in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces, including the Kalutara district, particularly after 2.00 p.m.
The weather advisory also highlights the possibility of fairly strong winds reaching speeds of around 40 kmph over the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in Hambantota, Monaragala and Ampara districts. Such wind conditions may cause temporary disruptions, including fallen tree branches and power interruptions.
In addition, misty conditions are expected during the early morning hours in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, along with Galle and Matara districts, which could reduce visibility on roads and pose risks to motorists.
The general public is strongly advised to take adequate precautions against lightning strikes, temporary localized strong winds, and sudden weather changes, especially during thundershowers. Authorities urge residents in vulnerable areas to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and official advisories.
