Sri Lanka Weather Update: Heavy Showers, Strong Winds and Morning Mist Expected on December 28
Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 28 December 2025— The Department of Meteorology has issued its latest national weather forecast, warning of widespread showers, possible heavy rainfall, strong winds, and misty conditions across several parts of Sri Lanka today.
According to the forecast issued at 5.30 a.m., several spells of showers are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district. These rainy conditions may continue intermittently throughout the day, potentially affecting daily activities in affected regions.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are likely to occur at several locations in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Galle, Matara, and Kalutara districts after 2.00 p.m. The Meteorology Department has cautioned that fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm may occur at some places in these areas, raising concerns over localized flooding and water accumulation.
In addition to rainfall, fairly strong winds of around 40 kmph can be expected at times, particularly over the eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, and in the districts of Hambantota, Monaragala, and Trincomalee. Such wind conditions may result in fallen trees, power interruptions, and minor property damage.
The general public is strongly advised to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage caused by temporary localized strong winds, lightning, and intense thundershowers, and to stay alert for further updates issued by the Department of Meteorology.
