Heavy Rains and Strong Winds Forecast Across Several Parts of Sri Lanka
The Department of Meteorology has warned of enhanced rainfall and strong winds across multiple regions of Sri Lanka during the next 36 hours, with the possibility of fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm in some areas.
According to the latest forecast, showers will occur at times in Uva province, as well as in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Polonnaruwa. Meteorologists caution that fairly heavy rainfalls above 50 mm are likely at isolated locations, raising concerns over localized flooding and landslides.
Meanwhile, several spells of showers are expected in the Northern Province and in Kandy, Anuradhapura, and Trincomalee districts, bringing wet conditions to parts of the north and north-central regions.
Afternoon and evening thundershowers are also forecast at several places in Sabaragamuwa province and in the Galle, Matara, and Kalutara districts, particularly after 2.00 p.m. Residents in these areas are advised to remain alert to sudden weather changes.
In addition, fairly strong winds reaching around 40 kmph may occur at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, as well as in Hambantota, Monaragala, and Trincomalee districts.
Misty conditions are expected during the early morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, including Galle and Matara, which may reduce visibility, especially along roads in hilly and coastal areas.
The general public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage caused by temporary localized strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning associated with thundershowers. issued at 4.00 p.m. on 28 December 2025
