Issued at 2.00 p.m. on 27 December 2025
Weather conditions across Sri Lanka are expected to remain unsettled on Sunday (28 December), with widespread showers, thundershowers, and fairly strong winds affecting several provinces, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Several spells of showers are forecast in the Uva Province and in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, and Hambantota, particularly during the daytime. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in Sabaragamuwa Province and in Galle, Matara, and Kalutara districts after 2.00 p.m.
Meteorologists warn that fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations in these areas.
A few intermittent showers may also occur in the Northern Province and in Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts, while early morning misty conditions are expected in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara.
Fairly strong winds of around 40 kmph may occur at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern and North-Western Provinces, and in Anuradhapura, Hambantota, Monaragala, and Trincomalee districts, increasing the risk of localized damage.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Motorists are also urged to exercise caution in misty and rain-affected areas.
