Heavy Afternoon Showers Expected in Southern Areas
Issued at 2.00 p.m. on 24 December 2025
The Department of Meteorology forecasts mixed weather conditions across Sri Lanka on Christmas Day, with afternoon thundershowers and fairly heavy rainfall expected in several parts of the island.
A few showers may occur in the Uva Province and in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya during the day. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several locations in Galle, Matara, Kalutara, and Ratnapura districts after 2.00 p.m.
According to the forecast, fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some places in the Southern and Sabaragamuwa regions, increasing the risk of localized flooding and temporary disruptions.
Misty conditions can be expected during the early morning hours in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in Kalutara, Badulla, Galle, and Matara districts, potentially reducing visibility for motorists.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers. Outdoor activities, travel plans, and Christmas celebrations should be arranged with caution, especially in areas prone to heavy rain.
Authorities urge residents to stay updated with the latest weather advisories to minimize potential weather-related damage.
