A powerful nor’easter is battering the northeastern United States, bringing coastal flooding, heavy rain and strong winds while disrupting power supplies, air travel and major events across the region.
The storm has affected communities from the Mid-Atlantic to New England, with New York and New Jersey declaring states of emergency in areas facing the greatest impacts. The National Weather Service has warned that coastal flooding, rough surf, strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall could continue through Monday.
Coastal flooding hits New Jersey and New York
Coastal communities in New Jersey have experienced significant flooding, with roads and properties inundated in several locations. Officials have warned residents in low-lying coastal areas to remain away from floodwater and follow local safety instructions.
New York City and surrounding coastal areas have also faced flooding concerns, with high tides adding to the risk. Forecasts called for strong wind gusts across the region, while the Jersey Shore experienced gusts exceeding 60 mph in some locations.
The storm has also produced dangerous surf and beach conditions along parts of the East Coast.
More than 100,000 customers lose power
The storm has caused widespread power disruptions across the Northeast. More than 100,000 homes and businesses were without electricity at one point on Saturday, although the number later declined as utility crews restored some services.
Falling trees and branches have contributed to some of the outages. In Brooklyn, a man was killed after a falling tree struck him during the storm, according to CBS New York.
Flight disruptions and event cancellations
The nor’easter has also caused major disruption to air travel. FlightAware data cited in recent reports showed more than 400 cancellations and more than 1,300 delays on Saturday as the storm affected airports across the region.
Authorities have advised passengers to check directly with their airlines before travelling.
A number of sporting and entertainment events were also cancelled or postponed because of the weather. The Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park was cancelled, while several sporting events were rescheduled.
Storm expected to continue affecting the Northeast
The National Weather Service expects the nor’easter to continue bringing strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding across parts of the Mid-Atlantic and New England.
Forecasters have also highlighted the role of high tides in worsening coastal flooding, particularly along exposed shorelines.
Authorities across affected areas are urging residents to monitor official weather updates and avoid flooded roads and coastal waters as hazardous conditions continue.
