Update – Red Warning Issued for Bay of Bengal as Deep Depression Weakens

Warning for strong winds and rough seas.

A red-level warning for strong winds and very rough seas has been issued for the deep sea areas of the Bay of Bengal, with winds expected to reach 70 km/h as a deep depression gradually weakens.

The warning was issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 10.00 p.m. on 24 September 2026 and is valid for the next 12 hours.

The deep depression over north coastal Andhra Pradesh had moved northwestwards and was centred at 12.00 UTC (5.30 p.m.) on 24 September near 19.1°N latitude and 83.0°E longitude, around 1,150 km northeast of Kankesanthurai.

According to the latest advisory, the system is very likely to continue moving north-northwestwards and weaken into a depression within the next six hours. It is then expected to gradually weaken further during the following 24 hours.

Winds Up to 70 km/h and Very Rough Seas

Wind speeds in sea areas under the “Warning” category could increase to around 70 km/h at times. Heavy thundershowers are also possible, while sea conditions in these areas are expected to become very rough.

Meanwhile, winds in sea areas covered by the “Advisory” category could reach 55–65 km/h, with seas becoming rough to very rough at times.

The warning covers sea areas bounded by 12°N to 22°N latitude and 82°E to 90°E longitude.

Naval and fishing communities have been warned not to venture into these sea areas until further notice. Those already operating in the affected waters have been advised to move away from the affected areas.

The Department of Meteorology has also urged naval and fishing communities to remain vigilant and closely follow future forecasts and official weather bulletins as the system continues to weaken and move north-northwestwards.
