A depression over southern Chhattisgarh and adjoining southern interior Odisha is expected to gradually weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during the next 24 hours, according to the latest tropical weather outlook issued by the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC), New Delhi.
The system moved north-northwestwards at around 15 km/h during the past six hours and was centred at 8.30 a.m. IST on 25 September 2026 near 20.9°N latitude and 82.4°E longitude.
At the time, the depression was located close to northwest of Nuapada in Odisha, around 80 km southeast of Raipur, 130 km southwest of Champa and 140 km south of Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh.
The system is expected to continue moving north-northwestwards while maintaining depression intensity for the next 12 hours. It is then likely to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during the following 12 hours.
The system is being continuously monitored by Doppler Weather Radars at Sambalpur and Raipur.
Winds and Rough Seas
The depression currently has maximum sustained winds of around 45–55 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 65 km/h. The estimated central pressure is 992 hPa.
Sea conditions remain rough over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, as well as along the north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts.
Forecast guidance indicates that wind speeds will gradually decrease as the system moves further inland and interacts with land.
Heavy Weather Activity Over Several Areas
Satellite observations show scattered to broken low- and medium-level clouds with embedded intense to very intense convection over areas including Vidarbha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The system is also influencing cloud activity over parts of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Marathawada, Rayalaseema and North Interior Karnataka.
According to the latest numerical model guidance, there is a high level of confidence in the system’s current location, forecast track and expected intensity changes.
The depression is expected to continue its north-northwestward movement and gradually weaken under the influence of land interaction and increasing wind shear.
The latest assessment indicates that the system will maintain its depression status for around the next 12 hours before weakening into a well-marked low-pressure area.
