Update 2 : Deep Depression Crosses Andhra Pradesh–South Odisha Coast

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is crossing the North Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts, bringing strong winds and rough sea conditions along the affected coastal areas, according to the latest Tropical Weather Outlook issued by the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC), New Delhi.

At 6.00 p.m. on 23 September 2026, the system was located over the coastal region near 18.2°N, 83.9°E, around 54 km southwest of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 80 km northeast of Visakhapatnam and 170 km southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha.

The deep depression is crossing the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to the southwest of Kalingapatnam. The system is expected to move inland after landfall and gradually weaken.

Winds Up to 70 km/h

The system is currently producing maximum sustained winds of around 55–65 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h. Sea conditions remain very rough over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.

According to the forecast, the system is expected to maintain deep depression intensity for around the next 12 hours. It will then gradually weaken, with the system forecast to become a depression during 24 September.

The latest forecast track indicates continued west-northwestward movement after landfall, followed by gradual weakening as the system moves further inland.

Heavy Convection and Strong Weather Activity

Satellite observations show intense to very intense convection around the system. Cloud activity associated with the deep depression is spread across parts of the Bay of Bengal and neighbouring areas, including Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka.

Meteorological analysis indicates that the system remains under favourable atmospheric conditions for continued activity in the immediate period around landfall. However, interaction with land is expected to contribute to a gradual decline in its strength.

The system is being closely monitored by Doppler Weather Radar at Visakhapatnam, with further updates expected as it moves inland.

Forecast guidance currently has a high level of confidence in the system’s location, track and intensity. Authorities and communities along the affected coastal areas are advised to continue following official weather bulletins, particularly as strong winds and very rough seas persist around the system.
