The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a heavy rain advisory for several parts of Sri Lanka, warning of showers or thundershowers and the possibility of rainfall exceeding 100 mm in some locations.
The advisory, issued at 7.00 a.m. on 24 September 2026, is valid until 7.00 a.m. on 25 September.
According to the warning, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Southern provinces. Heavy rainfall of more than 100 mm is possible in some areas.
Residents in these provinces are advised to remain prepared, particularly in locations that are vulnerable to flooding and other weather-related hazards.
Rough Seas and Strong Winds Along Coastal Waters
A separate advisory has also been issued for several sea areas around Sri Lanka.
Sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Negombo via Kankasanthurai and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, are expected to become rough to very rough at times.
Strong gusty winds of around 55–65 km/h are possible in these sea areas.
The wave height could increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara.
The Marine Meteorological Division has urged naval and fishing communities operating in the affected sea areas to remain vigilant and closely monitor weather conditions.
With both heavy rain over land and rough sea conditions expected, the public is advised to follow updates and safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
