The Department of Meteorology has forecast continued wet and cloudy weather across Sri Lanka on 12 May 2026 as a low-pressure area persists in the sea to the northeast of the island. Under the influence of this weather system, widespread showers and thundershowers are expected to affect most parts of the country over the next few days.
According to the latest forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in most areas of the island, with overcast skies expected throughout the day. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-Western and Northern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district.
Residents in these areas are strongly advised to remain alert, as intense rain may lead to localized flooding and travel disruptions. Temporary strong winds and lightning are also possible during thundershowers. The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage and ensure personal safety.
Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka
The same low-pressure system is expected to strengthen winds over the sea areas surrounding Sri Lanka during the coming days. Naval and fishing communities are advised to closely monitor future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in all sea areas around the island. Winds will be westerly or variable in direction with speeds of 25–35 kmph, increasing up to 50 kmph at times in the coastal waters from Galle to Hambantota via Matara.
Sea conditions in these areas will be rough at times, while other surrounding sea areas will remain moderate. During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected.
