The Department of Meteorology has forecast that the unsettled weather across Sri Lanka will continue over the next few days as a low-pressure area has developed to the northeast of the island.
According to the latest weather analysis, the low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka intensified into a low-pressure system on the morning of 11 May. As a result, cloudy skies and widespread showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of the country throughout 12 May 2026.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-Western and Northern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District. Residents in these areas are advised to remain alert for possible localized flooding, waterlogging and travel disruptions.
The general public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Area Forecast
Weather conditions over the surrounding sea areas are also expected to deteriorate as the low-pressure system strengthens. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island.
Winds will be westerly or variable, with speeds of 25–35 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas from Galle to Hambantota via Matara.
The sea in these coastal areas will be rough at times, while other sea areas will be moderate. Temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
The naval and fishing communities are advised to closely monitor future forecasts and warnings issued by the Department of Meteorology.
