SRI LANKA WEATHER FORECAST FOR TODAY, 09 February 2026

Weather conditions across Sri Lanka on 09 February 2026 are expected to remain mostly fair, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers forecast in a few parts of the island, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers may occur after 2.00 p.m. at a few places in the Galle, Matara, Kalutara and Ratnapura districts. These afternoon thundershowers may be accompanied by temporary localized strong winds and lightning, which could cause minor damage in vulnerable areas. The general public is advised to remain cautious, particularly during outdoor activities in the affected districts.

Elsewhere across the island, mainly fair weather will prevail throughout the day, allowing for favorable conditions for daily activities, agriculture, and travel in most regions.

During the early hours of the morning, misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Central provinces, as well as in the Badulla and Kurunegala districts. Motorists are advised to exercise caution due to reduced visibility, especially in hilly and low-lying areas.

In the sea areas around the island, showers may occur at a few places off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Batticaloa. Additionally, showers or thundershowers may occur in the evening or night at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalutara to Matara via Galle. Mainly fair weather is expected in the other sea areas around the island.

Winds over the sea areas will be north-easterly, with speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalutara to Mannar via Colombo and Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. As a result, rough sea conditions are expected in these areas, while other sea areas will remain moderate.

Fishermen and naval communities are strongly advised to remain vigilant, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
