Fairly Rough Seas and Showers Forecast Around Sri Lanka’s Coastal Waters
The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather advisory for sea areas around Sri Lanka, warning of showers, gusty winds, and fairly rough sea conditions during the next 24 hours.
showers are expected at several locations in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee. In addition, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in other surrounding sea areas, particularly during unstable weather periods.
Winds over the coastal waters will be northerly to north-easterly, with speeds generally ranging between 30 and 40 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo, creating challenging conditions for marine activities.
The sea state in the coastal belt from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo is expected to be fairly rough at times, while other sea areas around the island will remain moderate.
Meteorologists further caution that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers, posing potential risks to small fishing vessels and naval activities.
The Department of Meteorology advises fishermen and naval communities to exercise caution, closely monitor official weather updates, and avoid venturing into affected sea areas during periods of rough weather.
