Heavy Showers and Strong Winds Forecast Across Several Parts of Sri Lanka
The Department of Meteorology has issued a general weather forecast for the next 36 hours, warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and misty conditions affecting multiple regions across Sri Lanka.
According to the forecast, showers will occur at times in the Northern, Eastern, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Polonnaruwa districts. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations, raising the risk of localized flooding and disruptions.
In addition, several spells of showers are expected in the North-western Province, along with the Kandy and Anuradhapura districts, while showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places in the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in the Kalutara district, particularly after 2.00 p.m.
Meteorologists also warn of fairly strong winds reaching speeds of around 40 kmph at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as across the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces. Similar windy conditions are expected in Hambantota, Monaragala, and Trincomalee districts.
Meanwhile, misty conditions are likely during the early morning hours in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, and in the Galle and Matara districts, potentially reducing visibility on roads.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Motorists, residents in landslide-prone areas, and outdoor workers are urged to remain vigilant. Issued at 2.00 p.m. on 29 December 2025
