MARINE WEATHER FORECAST FOR 30 DECEMBER 2025

Rough Sea Conditions Expected in Several Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather forecast for the next 24 hours, warning of rough sea conditions and strong winds in several sea areas around Sri Lanka.

According to the forecast, showers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee. In addition, showers or thundershowers are expected at a few locations off the coast from Kalutara to Hambantota via Galle, particularly during the evening or night.

North-easterly winds will prevail over the sea areas surrounding the island, with wind speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph. Meteorologists caution that wind speeds could increase up to 45–50 kmph at times, especially in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Due to these conditions, the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be rough at times. Meanwhile, other sea areas around the island will remain moderate.

The Department of Meteorology advises fishermen and naval communities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, particularly in areas where rough seas and strong winds are expected. Small fishing vessels and leisure craft are urged to exercise caution during the forecast period. Issued at 2.00 p.m. on 29 December 2025
