Rough Sea Conditions and Strong Winds Forecast Around Sri Lanka

Colombo, December 17 — The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory for sea areas around Sri Lanka, warning of showers, strong winds and rough sea conditions during the next 24 hours.

According to the forecast issued at 5.30 a.m., showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Pottuvil. Showers or thundershowers may also develop at several places in the other sea areas around the island, particularly during the evening or night.

The Met Department said north-easterly winds are expected, with wind speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. Wind speeds may increase up to 50–55 kilometres per hour at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Galle via Puttalam, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee, Pottuvil and Hambantota.

Sea conditions are expected to be rough at times in the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Galle via Puttalam, Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee, Pottuvil and Hambantota, while the remaining sea areas around the island will be moderate.

The Department of Meteorology cautioned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, and advised fishermen and naval communities to remain vigilant.
