Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Forecast Across Sri Lanka Today
Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 17 December 2025
The Department of Meteorology has forecast continued showery conditions across several parts of Sri Lanka today, under the influence of an active Easterly wave affecting the island.
According to the Met Department, showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Eastern and Central provinces, as well as in the Badulla and Polonnaruwa districts.
Showers or thundershowers are also expected at several places in the remaining parts of the country after 1.00 p.m., with fairly heavy rainfall above 75 mm anticipated in some areas.
The forecast further warns of strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph, particularly over the Eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.
The Department of Meteorology has urged the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
