Showers and Thundershowers Expected Across Several Provinces in Next 36 Hours
Colombo, December 12, 2025 — The Department of Meteorology has issued a general weather forecast for the next 36 hours, warning of widespread showers, thundershowers, and windy conditions across multiple regions of the island.

According to the advisory issued at 4.00 p.m. today, several spells of showers are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, Central, and North-Western provinces. Meanwhile, other areas of the country may experience showers or thundershowers after 1.00 p.m., with some locations likely to receive fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm.
The Met Department further notes that fairly strong winds between 30–40 km/h can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, and the Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Monaragala districts.
Additionally, misty conditions are forecast during the early morning hours in parts of the Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Southern provinces.
Authorities urge the public to take necessary precautions to minimize damages caused by localized strong winds and lightning, especially during thundershowers.
