Colombo, December 12, 2025 — The Disaster Management Center (DMC) reports that more than 5,700 houses have been completely destroyed as a result of the severe adverse weather conditions affecting the country in recent weeks.
According to the latest situation report, the Kandy District has suffered the highest destruction, with 1,568 houses fully destroyed and 14,111 partially damaged. The Nuwara Eliya District recorded the second-highest number of damaged homes, reporting 767 completely destroyed and 3,742 partially damaged houses.
The Puttalam District ranks third, with 627 houses fully destroyed and 20,813 partially damaged, marking one of the largest totals of property damage in the current disaster situation.
Beyond these majorly impacted districts, significant damages have also been reported in:
- Kurunegala – 594 houses destroyed
- Badulla – 578 houses destroyed
- Kegalle – 317 houses destroyed
- Anuradhapura – 234 houses destroyed
- Polonnaruwa – 225 houses destroyed
Thousands Affected Across Multiple Districts
The Colombo District has reported the highest number of affected individuals, with 330,443 people from 86,147 families impacted by the ongoing disaster.
Other districts with large affected populations include:
- Puttalam: 287,364 individuals from 80,375 families
- Kandy: 171,127 individuals from 54,716 families
- Trincomalee: 90,140 individuals from 27,234 families
- Kurunegala: 88,899 individuals from 26,474 families
- Mannar: 77,694 individuals from 23,704 families
- Kegalle: 83,482 individuals from 23,324 families
- Anuradhapura: 74,084 individuals from 22,562 families
- Badulla: 73,547 individuals from 22,257 families
- Ratnapura: 74,277 individuals from 19,092 families
Death Toll Rises to 640
The DMC confirms that the death toll has climbed to 640, with the highest number of fatalities reported from the Kandy District, which has recorded 234 deaths.
Other fatality figures include:
- Badulla: 90 deaths
- Nuwara Eliya: 89 deaths
- Kurunegala: 61 deaths
- Puttalam: 36 deaths
- Kegalle: 32 deaths
- Matale: 29 deaths
Over 82,000 Individuals Sheltered in Evacuation Camps
A total of 82,813 people from 26,103 families are currently housed in 847 displacement camps across the island.
The highest number of shelters has been set up in the Kandy District, where 27,227 people from 7,952 families are staying in 279 camps.
The Nuwara Eliya District hosts the second-largest number of evacuees, with 20,825 individuals from 6,652 families accommodated in 211 safe locations.
In the Badulla District, 147 safe locations are currently housing 17,444 individuals from 5,856 families, while 104 shelters in Kegalle are accommodating 8,658 people from 2,980 families.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as heavy rains and adverse weather conditions persist across several regions.
