The Meteorology Department has warned of unsettled sea conditions around the island over the next 24 hours, starting from 5.30 a.m. 14 December.
Showers are expected at several locations in sea areas off the coast stretching from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. Meanwhile, a few showers or thundershowers may occur in other surrounding sea areas, particularly during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly, with speeds of 30–40 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase to 50–55 kmph at times in sea areas from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai, as well as from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
Sea conditions in these areas are expected to be rough at times, while other sea areas around the island will experience moderate conditions.
The Department further cautioned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers, advising fishermen and naval communities to remain vigilant.
