Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of afternoon showers and thundershowers in several areas on 29 September 2026. According to the latest weather forecast, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Eastern and Central provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts after 2.00 p.m.
During the morning, a few showers may occur in coastal areas of the Western Province and in the Galle and Matara districts. Most other areas are expected to remain relatively dry outside the areas affected by afternoon rainfall.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions during thundershowers, as temporary localized strong winds and lightning may occur. People engaging in outdoor activities should remain alert to sudden changes in weather conditions, particularly during the afternoon and evening.
Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka
Showers are expected at a few places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. During the evening or night, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the sea areas extending from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa.
Winds around the island will be south-westerly, with speeds of 25–35 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
As a result, the sea areas from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be fairly rough at times. Mariners and fishing communities should remain cautious, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
