Weather conditions across Sri Lanka are expected to remain unstable on 31 January 2026, with widespread rainfall and thundershowers affecting multiple regions of the island. According to the latest forecast, showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely in several areas, particularly in the Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, and Matale districts, which may increase the risk of localized flooding and temporary disruptions.
Meanwhile, several spells of showers are expected in the Uva and North-Western provinces, contributing to persistent wet weather conditions. In other parts of the island, showers or thundershowers are likely at several places after 2.00 p.m., and fairly heavy falls above 50 mm may occur in some locations. These afternoon and evening storms may be accompanied by strong gusty winds and lightning, posing potential hazards to outdoor activities and transportation.
Additionally, misty conditions are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts during the early morning hours. Motorists and commuters are advised to exercise caution due to reduced visibility during these periods.
Sea Area Forecast:
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coasts from Hambantota to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Furthermore, showers or thundershowers may also occur in other surrounding sea areas during the evening or night. Winds will blow from the north-east at speeds of 30–40 kmph, with gusts increasing up to 45–50 kmph at times, especially in the sea areas from Kalutara to Mannar via Colombo and Puttalam, and from Hambantota to Batticaloa via Pottuvil. These regions are expected to experience fairly rough sea conditions, while other areas will remain moderate.
The general public and mariners are strongly advised to take necessary safety precautions to minimize risks from heavy rainfall, strong winds, lightning, and rough seas.
