Weather conditions across Sri Lanka on 31 January 2026 are expected to remain unsettled, with widespread showers and thundershowers affecting many parts of the island. According to the latest forecast, showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, and Central provinces, while fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations, particularly in the Mullaittivu, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, and Matale districts.
In addition, several spells of showers are expected in the Uva and North-Western provinces, contributing to continued wet conditions throughout the day. Showers or thundershowers are likely at several places in other parts of the island after 2.00 p.m., and fairly heavy falls above 50 mm may occur at some locations during the evening hours. These weather conditions may be accompanied by temporary localized strong winds and lightning.
During the early morning hours, misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, which may reduce visibility for motorists and commuters.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Furthermore, showers or thundershowers may develop in other sea areas around the island, particularly during the evening or night.
Winds over the sea areas will be north-easterly, with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph, while wind speeds may increase up to 45–50 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kaluthara to Mannar via Colombo and Puttalam, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. These areas are expected to experience fairly rough sea conditions, while other sea regions around the island will remain moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
The general public and maritime communities are advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damages caused by adverse weather conditions.
