Sri Lanka is expected to experience wet and windy weather conditions in several parts of the island on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, Showers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in these areas. Residents are advised to remain alert, particularly in areas prone to waterlogging and localized flooding. A few showers may also occur in the Anuradhapura, Matale and Hambantota districts.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places in the Ampara, Monaragala and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. Mainly dry weather is expected to prevail across most other parts of Sri Lanka.
Fairly strong winds of around 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and the Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts. The public is urged to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka
Showers may occur at several places in the sea areas from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. South-westerly winds are expected at speeds of 30–40 kmph.
Wind speeds may increase to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Mullaittivu to Chilaw via Kankasanthurai and Mannar, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Other sea areas may also experience winds reaching 50 kmph.
These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding waters may become fairly rough. Wave heights of approximately 2.0–2.5 metres are possible from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised to remain vigilant and monitor weather conditions before engaging in activities at sea.
