Several spells of showers are expected across parts of Sri Lanka on 23 August 2026, particularly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the districts of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara. A few showers may also occur in the North-Western Province.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few locations in the Ampara, Monaragala and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. Mainly dry weather is expected to prevail over the remaining areas of the island.
Fairly strong winds, with speeds of around 30–40 kmph, can occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North-Central and North-Western provinces, and the Mannar, Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Areas and Marine Weather
A few showers may occur in sea areas from Negombo to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Westerly to south-westerly winds will generally blow at speeds of 30–40 kmph.
Wind speeds may increase to 50–60 kmph at times in sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Other surrounding sea areas may experience winds of up to 45–50 kmph.
These coastal waters may become rough or fairly rough at times. Wave heights could reach approximately 2.0–2.5 metres from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised to remain vigilant.
