Sri Lanka is expected to experience several spells of showers in parts of the country on Saturday, 22 August 2026, while mainly dry weather will prevail across many other areas. According to the latest weather forecast, rainfall is expected mainly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara.
Residents in these areas should remain prepared for intermittent showers throughout the day. Meanwhile, comparatively dry conditions are expected to continue in most other parts of the island.
Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Mannar, Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts. People in affected areas are advised to remain cautious of strong winds.
Sea Areas and Marine Weather Forecast
Showers may occur in several sea areas extending from Negombo to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Westerly to south-westerly winds are expected, with speeds ranging from 30–40 kmph.
Wind speeds may increase to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Other sea areas may also experience winds reaching 45–50 kmph.
The seas off Kankasanthurai to Chilaw and Matara to Pottuvil are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding sea areas may become fairly rough. Wave heights may increase to approximately 2.5–3 metres in sea areas from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Galle and Matara. Naval and fishing communities operating in these waters are advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor weather conditions before heading out to sea.
