Several spells of showers are expected in parts of Sri Lanka on Friday, 21 August 2026, according to the latest weather forecast. Rainfall is likely at intervals in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
A few showers are also expected in the North-Western Province. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop at a few places in the Ampara, Monaragala and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. Mainly dry weather is expected to prevail across most other parts of the island.
Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North-Central and North-Western provinces, and the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts. The public is advised to take precautions against localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Areas and Coastal Conditions
Showers may occur in sea areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Westerly to south-westerly winds are expected at speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50–60 kmph at times in sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
These sea areas may become rough. Wave heights of approximately 2.5–3 metres are possible from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Galle and Matara. Nearshore areas from Beruwala to Matara via Galle may experience swell-wave surges. Fishing, naval and coastal communities are urged to remain vigilant.
