The Department of Meteorology has issued a red-level warning for strong winds and rough seas following the movement of a deep depression that crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast near the southwest of Kalingapatnam.
The system has since moved west-northwestwards and was centred at 5.30 a.m. today (24 September) over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, near 18.3°N latitude and 83.7°E longitude. At the time, it was located around 1,100 km northeast of Kankesanthurai.
According to the warning, wind speeds in sea areas marked under the “Warning” category could increase to around 70 km/h at times. Heavy thundershowers are also possible, while sea conditions in these areas are expected to become very rough.
Meanwhile, winds in sea areas under the “Advisory” category may reach 55–65 km/h at times, with seas becoming rough to very rough.
The Department of Meteorology has advised naval and fishing communities not to venture into the affected sea areas bounded by 10°N to 22°N latitude and 82°E to 90°E longitude until further notice.
Naval and fishing communities already operating in these waters have also been advised to move away from the affected areas and continue monitoring official weather updates.
The warning remains in place as the weather system continues to influence sea conditions in the region.
