Heavy Showers Expected Across Several Regions of Sri Lanka on January 26
Weather conditions across Sri Lanka are expected to remain unsettled on January 26, 2026, with showers forecast in multiple provinces, according to the latest meteorological update. Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts, bringing wet conditions to both lowland and hill country areas.
The North-Western Province may experience several spells of showers, while showers or thundershowers are expected at several places across the rest of the island after 2.00 p.m. Forecasters warn of fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm in parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, including the Galle and Matara districts, which could impact daily activities.
During the early morning hours, misty conditions are likely in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara, potentially reducing visibility for motorists and commuters.
Authorities urge the general public to take necessary precautions to minimize risks caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers, especially in vulnerable areas.
For sea areas around the island, showers will occur at several places off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. Isolated showers or thundershowers may also occur in other marine regions during the evening or nighttime.
Easterly to north-easterly winds are expected to blow at speeds of 25–35 kmph, occasionally strengthening to 40–45 kmph in sea areas from Puttalam to Mannar and from Hambantota to Batticaloa. These conditions will make the sea fairly rough at times, while other surrounding waters will remain slight to moderate.
Fishermen and naval communities are advised to exercise caution due to the possibility of strong gusty winds and rough seas during thundershowers.
