Tropical Cyclone Grant is forecast to remain a category one system as it passes just north of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands on Christmas Day, bringing hazardous weather conditions to the remote Australian territory.
Authorities have issued a Cyclone Watch and Act alert for the islands, advising residents to stay indoors and follow safety guidelines as the system moves through the area. Meteorologists warn that strong winds, intense rainfall, and flash flooding are likely during the passage of the cyclone.
Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 100 kilometres per hour, while persistent heavy rain could lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are located more than 2,000 kilometres northwest of the Western Australian coastline, roughly halfway between Australia and Sri Lanka. The island group has a population of around 600 people. Although the archipelago includes 27 islands, only West Island and Home Island are permanently inhabited.
Local officials said the community is familiar with severe weather during this time of year, and cyclone shelters have been made available as a precautionary measure.
Early reports suggest minor flooding and fallen trees in some locations; however, authorities said a full assessment of damage will only be possible once weather conditions improve.
Emergency services continue to monitor Tropical Cyclone Grant closely and have urged residents to remain alert for further updates as the system passes through the region.
