Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 01 September 2026

Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of rainy and dry weather conditions on 01 September 2026, Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Showers or thundershowers may develop at a few locations in the Uva Province and in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts after 2.00 p.m. Meanwhile, mainly dry weather is expected to prevail across most other parts of the island.

Strong Winds and Weather Precautions

Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central hills, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts. The public is advised to take appropriate precautions during thundershowers, as temporary localized strong winds and lightning may occur.

Sun Directly Over Sri Lanka

An important astronomical event is also expected on 01 September. Due to the apparent southward movement of the Sun, it will be directly overhead Sri Lankan latitudes from 28 August to 07 September.

On 01 September, the Sun is expected to be directly overhead the areas around Kalpitiya, Talawa, Sinharagama, Galkadawala, Nachchaduwa, Padikaramaduwa, Gomarankalla and Verugal at approximately 12.10 p.m.

Sea Weather Forecast

Marine conditions are expected to be more challenging in several coastal areas during the next 24 hours. Showers may occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be south-westerly at speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph in the sea areas from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar.

The sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times, while areas from Trincomalee to Puttalam may become fairly rough. Wave heights may increase to around 2.0–3.0 metres in the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Naval, fishing and other marine communities are advised to remain alert to changing conditions and follow official weather updates.
