Sri Lanka Weather Forecast for 31 August 2026: Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected
Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of rainy and dry weather conditions on 31 August 2026. Showers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Several spells of showers may also occur in the Western and North-Western provinces, while mainly dry weather will prevail over other parts of the island.
Strong winds are expected to be a notable feature of the weather. Winds of around 40–50 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts. Residents and motorists in affected areas are advised to remain cautious, particularly where strong winds may temporarily affect travel and outdoor activities.
Sun Overhead Over Sri Lanka
The sun will be directly overhead Sri Lanka during the period from 28 August to 7 September, due to its apparent southward movement. On 31 August, the sun will be directly overhead locations including Neriyakulam, Punewa, Kebithigollewa, Pankulam and Sinhapura, at approximately 12.10 p.m. People in these areas may experience strong daytime heat around midday and should take appropriate precautions.
Sri Lanka Sea Weather Forecast
Showers may occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. South-westerly winds will prevail, with speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph from Kankasanthurai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee.
Sea conditions will be rough at times from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil, while the Kankasanthurai–Batticaloa sea area may become fairly rough.
Wave heights may rise to 2.0–3.0 metres from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara. There is also a possibility of seawater inundation in nearshore areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Naval and fishing communities, along with coastal residents, are urged to remain vigilant and follow official weather updates.
