Sri Lanka is expected to experience a mix of rainy and thundery weather conditions on Thursday, 10 September 2026, Several areas across the island are likely to receive showers, while some provinces could experience heavier rainfall and thunderstorms during the afternoon.
Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Residents and commuters in these areas should be prepared for intermittent rainfall throughout the day.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Mullaitivu district after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations. Temporary localized strong winds and lightning may accompany thunderstorms, and the general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize possible impacts.
Sea Weather Around Sri Lanka
Marine conditions are also expected to become somewhat rough in selected areas during the next 24 hours. Showers may occur at a few places in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds are expected to blow at speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai.
The sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times, while the areas from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai may become fairly rough. Wave heights could increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
