Sri Lanka is expected to experience unsettled weather on 31 July 2026, with heavy rainfall, strong winds and hazardous sea conditions affecting several parts of the country. According to the latest weather forecast issued at 2.00 p.m. on 30 July 2026, residents in the southwestern region should prepare for periods of intense rain, while mariners are urged to avoid venturing into dangerous sea areas.
Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Some of these areas are likely to receive heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm, increasing the risk of localized flooding, waterlogging and minor landslides in vulnerable locations. A few showers are also expected in the North-Central Province, while mainly dry weather will prevail across the rest of the island.
In addition to rainfall, strong winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Central provinces, and in the Ratnapura, Monaragala, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and exercise caution when travelling, especially in areas exposed to strong gusts.
Sea Condition
Marine conditions will remain highly hazardous during the next 24 hours. Showers are expected in the sea areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. South-westerly winds will generally range between 30 and 40 kmph, but may strengthen to 60–70 kmph in the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar. The Department of Meteorology has advised naval and fishing communities not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.
Other coastal waters, including those from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu and Kalpitiya to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, will also experience rough seas with winds reaching 50–60 kmph. Wave heights are expected to increase to 2.0–2.5 metres from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, making sea travel dangerous. The public is encouraged to stay updated with official weather advisories and take all necessary safety precautions.
