The latest weather forecast for 09 July 2026 indicates that several spells of showers will continue in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya. These areas are expected to receive intermittent rainfall throughout the day, while mainly dry weather will prevail across most other parts of Sri Lanka.
Strong winds remain a significant feature of the forecast. Wind speeds of 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, Central, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces. Similar windy conditions are also forecast for the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts. Residents are advised to take precautions against falling branches and unsecured outdoor objects.
Sea Conditions
For sea areas around the island, a few showers are expected off the coast from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo. South-westerly winds will blow at speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Winds in the remaining sea areas may reach up to 50 kmph.
Sea conditions will be rough at times in these coastal waters, while other surrounding sea areas will remain fairly rough. Wave heights between 2.0 and 3.0 metres are also expected in the sea area from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo. Fishermen and marine operators are strongly advised to exercise caution before venturing out to sea.
