Warm Weather Advisory in Sri Lanka: Heat Index to Rise in Several Districts

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a Warm Weather Advisory for Sabaragamuwa Province and the districts of Kurunegala, Gampaha, and Monaragala. According to the advisory, the heat index—representing the temperature felt by the human body—is expected to rise to the “Caution Level” in several areas within these regions.

The heat index is calculated using both the maximum air temperature and the relative humidity. This measurement indicates how hot the weather actually feels to people, rather than the actual air temperature recorded by weather instruments. The forecast is produced by the Department of Meteorology using global numerical weather prediction model data and is issued for the upcoming day.

Health authorities warn that prolonged exposure to elevated heat levels may lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses if proper precautions are not taken. Therefore, the public is advised to remain cautious, particularly those working outdoors.

People working at construction sites or other outdoor job locations are advised to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in shaded areas. Individuals indoors should check on elderly persons and those who are ill, as they may be more vulnerable to heat stress. Parents and guardians are strongly reminded never to leave children unattended inside vehicles.

When spending time outdoors, people should limit strenuous activities, seek shade whenever possible, and remain well hydrated. Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing is also recommended to reduce heat absorption and maintain body comfort during warm conditions.
